Salsa is one of our most popular classes!
It is taught alongside Bachata Dance, and their music played together in Latin social parties. It’s danced at night and Latin clubs all around Austin, Texas, the United States and the rest of the world.
My wife and I have been going here almost a year and went from having two left feet to being comfortable dancing in public. As a stereotypical awkward white nerd, this is pretty huge. Beyond that though, I really enjoy the people and the vibe. Really relaxed and friendly.
Great floor, intimate setting with lots of one-on-one instruction. Fun and friendly socials and great classes with an emphasis on footwork and musicality. (I’ve mostly done Latin dance here.)
I’ve been taking lessons at Dance International for a few months now, and I have really enjoyed my time there. On Saturdays I take salsa and bachata lessons. After a quick warmup, the class is typically split into two levels: beginner and intermediate/advanced. Jorge Ortiz teaches the intermediate/advanced level, and he does a great job of keeping things fun and interesting. On Wednesdays I take Argentine tango lessons from Jason Laughlin, and I feel so lucky to have found him. Rather than teaching patterns, Jason focuses on giving his students a true understanding of the dance. He teaches you not only the movements, but also why you make them, and how you can use them to have a conversation with your partner. Taking lessons with Jason has been a fun and intellectually stimulating experience. I’ve also taken several other classes at Dance International, and I’ve found them enjoyable as well. With its fun, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere, Dance International is definitely a gem in Austin, and I’m glad I found it.
Awesome teachers, great crowd, nice dance floor. Currently taking their Latin dance classes, and enjoying it a lot.
What Levels do you have?
We teach salsa at two different levels:
- Beginner / Improver
- Intermediate / Advanced
If you are not comfortable stepping into a social dance floor, beginner lessons will teach you the core concepts of stepping, timing and turning. For those who want a challenge, advanced lessons will work on more complex patterns and flow. You can watch the videos below to give you an idea of what each one encompasses.
We have some of the best Salsa and Latin dancing in Austin. Why, you ask? Well, most for-profit dance studios in town concentrate on giving students patterns that they just memorize. We instead focus on technique so that the quality of your dancing is improved for all the moves you do. As a non-profit organization we strive to provide the best dance education instead of maximizing profits at the expense of our students. Don’t worry, we put plenty of fun patterns in our teaching to please everyone, they just look better!
Below is a list of what we offer in our dance instruction:
- Beginners & Advanced sections
- Double & Triple Turns
- Spot & Progressive Moves
- Lady’s styling
Fun & Challenging Salsa
Below is a video of a class warm-ups with our teachers. After warm-up we separate into different levels to match everyone’s ability!
Can you dance it?
YES! You don’t need to have a partner, shoes or experience, just come on in and we’ll get you moving. Our teachers can handle complete beginners to advanced students in our group classes. If you’re looking to accelerate your learning make sure to check our private lessons. And, if you’re new to Dance International, definitely check our New Student Special, it’s by far the best value in town.
When can I join?
For starters, make sure to check our Schedule, in specific our Latin classes. We offer Salsa or one of it’s variations (like Cumbia) multiple times a week. You can register for class online, join our Meetup group, or just show up at the door and our staff and volunteers will take care of you.
